Born in Berlin, Germany, and educated at the universities of Frankfurt and Göttingen, Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was one of the most prominent European figures of his age. His fame largely derived from his scientific expedition in Latin America between 1799 and 1804, which resulted in numerous discoveries, particularly related to physical geography and meteorology. Charles Reuben Hale (1837-1900) was born in Lewistown, Pa., and died in Cairo, Ill., where he was the consecrated Episcopal Bishop. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1858, and was ordained in 1860. From 1863 to 1870, Hale was a chaplain in the U.S. Navy.
