Facsimiles of French original and English translation of letter dated 12 March 1859 from Humboldt to Charles R. Hale, concerning the translation of the Rosetta Stone inscription by the Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania. The translation committee consisted of Hale, S. Huntington Jones and Henry Morton. Humboldt feels that the Society's efforts "contribute to prove the justice of the system of Champollion, to which my brother, William von Humboldt, was the first to render justice in Germany."

Charles Reuben Hale (1837-1900) was born in Lewistown, Pa., and died in Cairo, Ill., where he was the consecrated Episcopal Bishop. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1858, and was ordained in 1860. From 1863 to 1870, Hale was a chaplain in the U.S. Navy.
